There is nothing like a huge soft source on a stage to make a completely even overhead ambience. We built this 20’ x20’ soft box for a corporate concept video. DP @jonspeyers wanted a very even ambient lighting side to side and front to back. Above the silk hung 4 - 6k tungsten space lights. (The tungsten lamps have since been replaced by LED COB fixtures. Usually either a Forza 720b or an Evoke 1200b) Each space light is trimmed about 4’-5’ above the silk and spaced apart evenly. Duvatine skirt can also be placed below the silk to cut light off the surrounding walls etc. In this case we wanted to light the walls so no skirt. It worked great.
Note: The key light was positioned parallel with the front plane of the softbox downstage about 10-12 feet. it was an 8’x16’ key powered by 4 Gemini 2x1 soft panels. By the time we were done there were mirror balls, confetti canons and all manner of party lights. It was a riot of a show with some of our favorite people.
The shot required nice morning sun coming through the garage window onto the mower. The schedule had us arriving at this location at around 2 pm. The garage door at the location opened due east. It was late September and the sun was already on the west side of the house… no shot at actual sunlight…. We had planned for this and pulled out a 12k fresnel. After rigging a couple of kino 4 banks overhead to mimic the lights in the garage we called on the 12k to make the sunlight coming in the window. There is nothing like a big HMI for this. It makes the magic.
We have worked on aircraft related projects with some fine folks over the years. Lighting and aircraft is always a fun challenge. Working around these amazing flying machines also requires a constant level of care and thoughtfulness. It has been a pleasure to have had the opportunities to paint these aircraft with light over the years.
A fun one with @sethbinford in the casino awhile back.
We were called on a few years back to simulate moonlight coming into a bedroom. The location was on the second floor of this farmhouse. No problem for a towable boom. The moonlight was provided by a Joker 800 with a lantern. Today we would use a Forza 720b or an Evoke 1200b LED fixture but the Joker 800 worked really nicely for this.
